Sinopse
O assassinato
Depois de resolver um assunto no Oriente Médio, o detetive Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) está retornando para a Inglaterra a bordo do Expresso do Oriente. Durante a viagem, Poirot encontra seu amigo Bianchi (Martin Balsam), diretor da Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, que é dona da linha. O trem está incomumente lotado para a época do ano: todos os leitos de primeira classe foram reservados. Pouco depois da partida do trem de Istambul, um rico empresário americano, Ratchett (Richard Widmark), tenta garantir os serviços de Poirot por $15.000, já que recebeu muitas ameaças de morte, mas Poirot acha o caso de pouco interesse e o recusa. Naquela noite, o trem fica preso em uma forte nevasca nos Bálcãs. Na manhã seguinte, Ratchett é encontrado esfaqueado até a morte em sua cabine.
Pistas
O exame do Dr. Constantine (George Coulouris) no corpo revela que Ratchett foi esfaqueado 12 vezes. Algumas feridas eram leves, mas pelo menos três delas poderiam ter resultado em morte.

Motivo
