Adventureland is set in the summer of 1987 in Pittsburgh. Young adult James Brennan, a recent college graduate with a degree in comparative literature, is about to embark on a six-week vacation in Europe before starting graduate school in journalism at Columbia University in New York City.
However, James' plans are derailed when his parents announce they can no longer financially support him. In order to make ends meet, James takes a job at Adventureland, a third-rate amusement park, as a games operator.
At Adventureland, James meets Emily Lewin, another games operator who catches his eye. With the help of the park's maintenance man, Mike Connell, James navigates his new job and his budding relationship with Emily.
As James and Emily's relationship develops, secrets and complications arise, including James' attraction to Lisa P., a popular coworker. Through his experiences at Adventureland, James gains a better understanding of what he truly wants and needs in his future.
