Synopsis

Amin is a Senegalese construction worker in France. His wife and three children have remained in Senegal where they live with his mother, not always in harmony. Amin sends money regularly and visits during his holidays, but his wife does not think it is enough. The children are growing up without seeing their father sufficiently, and the gifts that he brings them do not make up for his absence. She would like the family to move to France, which does not seem to be an option.

Life in the workers' foyer is grim, even though there is quite a bit of camaraderie among the residents, most of whom work in the same profession, not always legally. There are some brief glimpses into the lives of the other residents, and it is pretty much the same for all of them. They have communal meals and take up collections for schools in their home countries.

One day, Amin gets a ride back to the foyer by the woman at whose home he is working. The other workers left earlier, and Amin missed the last bus back to the foyer in the suburbs. She is divorced and is living with her teenage daughter. A relationship develops between the woman and Amin. The daughter disapproves, and Amin's wife also seems to sense that something has changed.

Construction has begun on a new house in Senegal, because Amin has no intention of living permanently in France even though the French woman seems to be becoming more and more attached to him. One day, one of the other workers dies in an accident and this seems to confirm the decision that Amin has taken.
