Synopsis

Ask the Dust is set in early-1930s Los Angeles, California where racism, poverty, and disease color the Bunker Hill neighborhood. Arturo Bandini, portrayed by Colin Farrell, arrives from Colorado with the ambition to write the great Los Angeles novel.

Six months later, Arturo is struggling financially and orders a cup of coffee served by Camilla Lopez, played by Salma Hayek. Camilla is described as beautiful, self-possessed, and Mexican.

Arturo receives advice and encouragement from H.L. Mencken, portrayed by Richard Schickel, which motivates him to continue writing and seeing Camilla. However, Arturo's behavior towards Camilla is mean without any apparent reason, causing their relationship to falter.

A housekeeper from back East suggests a way for Arturo to overcome his jealousy and fears, leading to a potential resolution in the story.
