Barefoot
Nick (Til Schweiger), an ordinary man who regularly loses his job, works for a short time in a psychiatric clinic. There, he prevents the suicide of the patient Leila (Johanna Wokalek), who is always barefoot. She then follows him and wants to stay with him. Initially, Nick is not willing to do so, but he cannot get rid of her.
Both protagonists have clearly dysfunctional family backgrounds. Nick has a big problem with his influential and wealthy stepfather and also with his brother Viktor (Steffen Wink). Leila was locked up at home by her mother for the first 19 years of her life. After her mother's death, for which Leila was partially responsible due to failure to provide assistance, she is admitted to the clinic. Leila is very naive and emotionally still a child; for example, she takes everything literally that is said to her. She also hates physical contact with strangers.
Nick is reminded by his mother that he is invited to his brother's wedding with Nick's former girlfriend. During the three-day journey from Munich to Hamburg, where there are some obstacles and a lot of situational comedy due to Leila's understanding of reality, a very extraordinary love relationship gradually begins. The relationship between Nick and his stepfather escalates at the wedding. As a result, Nick once again tries to get rid of Leila towards the psychiatric clinic, but shortly after confesses his love to Leila. After Nick is arrested for alleged kidnapping and Leila is back in the clinic, they both try to see each other again. After one last unsuccessful attempt to fit into the world of merciless, neoliberal entrepreneurs, Nick decides to have himself admitted to Leila's clinic with the help of a simulated illness. After Leila's suicide attempt and a conversation with Nick, her treating doctor changes her opinion about Nick and admits him to the clinic. The final scene of the film shows Nick and Leila outside the clinic, practicing shopping. Both have been discharged from the clinic.
