This documentary is part of a series that describes wars, battles, and revolutions that were turning points in Western history. This video explains the importance of the Gallic Wars to ancient Rome. Julius Caesar's campaigns in Gaul between 58-51 B.C. are collectively termed the Gallic Wars, and involved the conquest of the peoples of what is now modern Europe. Some of Caesar's invasions were successful and some were not, but they all provided him with wealth, a trained standing army, and enormous popularity to defeat his rivals in Rome. The film includes eyewitness accounts of the wars, notably the writings of Julius Caesar himself. There are also battle reconstructions and re-enactments, contemporary illustrations, 3-D computer graphics, maps, incisive commentary, and specially shot location footage.
