Beyond the Sea tells the story of crooner/actor Bobby Darin, blending fact, fiction, and fantasy. The film is framed around a biopic being filmed about Darin, with him playing himself and surrounded by his lifelong entourage from the Bronx.
In this fantasy, the young actor portraying Darin as a child in the biopic emerges as his true younger self, questioning if his adult self wants the biopic to be all sugar and roses or if he wants to tell the truth. The film explores Darin's sickly childhood, his vaudevillian mother Polly Cassotto, his musical mentor, and his older sister Nina Cassotto.
It also delves into Darin's early singing career, his marriage to actress Sandra Dee, their turbulent relationship, his turn to political activism in the late 1960s, and his attempts to reinvent himself as a singer in the early 1970s.
