Synopsis

Cape Fear is a story about a man named Robert Mitchum who enters a courthouse and asks for Sam Bowden. He watches Sam, played by Gregory Peck, in a trial and then follows him to his car, re-introducing himself as Max Cady. Max makes vaguely threatening comments as Sam drives off.

Later, Max watches Sam and his family bowling and makes a pass at the waitress. Sam calls police chief Dutton and tells him that Max is being creepy. He explains that Max is an ex-convict who may have a grudge against Sam, putting his family at risk. Dutton calls his deputies to pick up Max for vagrancy, but they release him as Max cooperates and knows the law.

The next day, Sam finds their dog poisoned and suspects Max but cannot prove it. His wife Peggy and daughter Nancy are distraught. Max hires a fiery lawyer who accuses the police of harassing him. Sam hires a private detective to follow Max, who suggests using Nancy as bait.

Sam and Deputy Kersek stake out a boat on the Cape Fear River. Max arrives and kills Kersek, setting the boat adrift with Peggy on it. Sam chases after, while Nancy calls the sheriff. Max attacks Peggy but leaves for Nancy when Sam arrives. They fight, and Sam shoots Max, who begs to be finished off. Sam declines, and the family leaves together.
