Crash is a film that takes place over a thirty-six hour period in Los Angeles, where the lives of several individuals from different backgrounds intersect as they navigate the complex race relations in the city.
Among the characters are the Caucasian district attorney who manipulates race for political gain, his Caucasian wife who holds prejudiced views after being carjacked by two black men, and the black carjackers who use their race to their advantage.
There are also partnered police constables, one of whom is racist and abuses his power, while the other struggles with his partner's views. A black film director and his wife face challenges in embracing their black identity, especially after an encounter with a racist cop.
Additionally, there are partnered police detectives, a Hispanic female and a black male, dealing with personal struggles, an East Asian man with valuable cargo in his van, a Persian store owner facing repeated robberies, and a Hispanic locksmith trying to protect his family in a dangerous world.
