As Rawlings settles into her new surroundings, she forms close relationships with the locals, including a black woman named Geechee and a moonshiner named Marsh Turner. Through these connections, Rawlings gains a deeper understanding of the people and the land around her.
However, tensions arise when Rawlings becomes involved in a legal dispute with Turner, leading to a courtroom showdown that tests the bonds of friendship and loyalty in the community.
