Days of Glory is a film set in Algeria, 1943, following the journey of North Africans through Italy and France, to Alsace in early 1945, with a coda years later. The North Africans volunteer to fight Germans to liberate France, their motherland.
We are introduced to Saïd, who is dirt poor and serves as an orderly for a grizzled sergeant named Martinez, a pied noir who is willing to speak up for his North African troops. There is also Messaoud, a crack shot who falls in love with a French woman in Province, and Abdelkader, a corporal and budding intellectual with a keen sense of injustice.
The men display courage in the face of small and large indignities, such as French soldiers receiving better food, time for leave, and promotions. The film questions whether the promise of liberty, equality, and fraternity is hollow.
