Synopsis

Empire Falls is a novel by Richard Russo that tells the story of Miles Roby, the manager of the Empire Grill in a small town in Maine. Miles is struggling to keep the restaurant afloat while dealing with his dysfunctional family, including his ex-wife Janine and their daughter Tick.

As Miles navigates his complicated relationships and tries to make sense of his past, he is also faced with the looming presence of the wealthy Whiting family, who own most of the town and seem to control everything. The novel explores themes of class, power, and the impact of the past on the present.

Through a series of flashbacks and present-day events, Empire Falls paints a vivid portrait of small-town life and the struggles of its inhabitants. The novel delves into the complexities of human relationships and the ways in which the past can shape our futures.
