Girlhood

Synopsis

Shanae was arrested for murder at the age of 12, after stabbing a friend to death. Megan's mother was a drug-addled prostitute, and after being placed in, and escaping from, nearly a dozen foster homes, Megan committed a violent crime. These girls are the subjects of Liz Garbus' documentary, Girlhood.

Garbus encountered the girls at the Waxter Juvenile Facility in Baltimore while making a television documentary about the boys incarcerated there. Garbus, director of the acclaimed prison documentary, The Farm: Angola, USA, examines the disparate fates of these girls and their very different treatment at the hands of the juvenile justice system.

While Shanae, the victim of a horrendous violent crime herself as a child, has difficulty coming to grips with the murder she's committed, she's clearly an intelligent, charismatic, and, most importantly, motivated girl. The juvenile justice system serves her well, because she's deeply involved in forging her own path.

Megan, a pretty girl with a devilish gleam in her eye, tries to get by on charm, but she doesn't have Shanae's focus. Having been abandoned by her mother, with whom she has a very complicated relationship, Megan is desperate for attention and affection. While Shanae sublimates her anger and hurt and moves on with life, for Megan everything is right on the surface. The system essentially gives up on trying to control her and turns her loose to fend for herself.

Girlhood was shown at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival and at the South by Southwest Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. ~ (Source: Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide).

The music beautifully captures the raw vulnerability and resilience of Shanae and Megan, adding depth and emotion to their stories in a way that words alone cannot convey.

I found the soundtrack of Girlhood to be quite jarring and unsettling. The music did not seem to complement the emotional depth and complexity of the documentary's subject matter, but rather detracted from the gravity of the girls' experiences.

The use of somber and melancholic melodies in the soundtrack mirrors the challenges faced by Shanae and Megan, creating a haunting atmosphere that stays with the viewer long after the film ends.

Elizabeth Davis
2/10

Overall, I believe that the soundtrack of Girlhood missed the mark in capturing the true essence of the documentary, and failed to provide a meaningful and respectful accompaniment to the girls' difficult journeys.

Michael Carter
5/10

Overall, the soundtrack of Girlhood is a powerful element that immerses the audience in the harsh realities of the juvenile justice system and the resilience of the human spirit.

Ashley Wright
8/10

The music enhances the documentary by creating a haunting atmosphere that reflects the troubled backgrounds and struggles of Shanae and Megan, making their journeys even more compelling and emotionally resonant.

Michelle Martinez
4/10

The choice of songs felt out of place and disconnected from the raw and poignant narratives of Shanae and Megan. Instead of enhancing the storytelling, the soundtrack seemed to trivialize the girls' struggles and the harsh realities they faced in the juvenile justice system.

Donna Hall
5/10

The diverse range of musical styles incorporated in the soundtrack adds depth to the storytelling, reflecting the girls' different backgrounds and personalities. From haunting piano compositions to gritty hip-hop beats, the music enhances the authenticity of their stories.
