Four young ladies--levelheaded Edith, girl-next-door Betty, dumb blonde Loretta and stuckup Camille--are forced to share a one-room apartment in Washington, D.C. during World War II. The four learned to live together and help each other, and took jobs to help in the war effort. The Coolidges were their landlords, Frankie was a cab-driving buddy of the girls and Benny was a pal of Frankie's.
