Synopsis

House of America tells the story of Boyo, who lives with his brother Sid, his sister Gwenny, and their elderly mother Marlene in an economically depressed area of South-West Wales.

Their father disappeared when they were young, supposedly heading to America. Sid, a leather-jacketed, motorbike-riding man, is obsessed with American culture and dreams of joining his father in the States.

When an open-cast mine opens nearby, the brothers try to get jobs there, but their mother opposes the idea. On the day they are supposed to start work, they discover that Marlene has sabotaged Sid's bike, ruining their chances of employment.

Sid and Gwenny start spending more time together, taking medication under their mother's name and drinking stolen alcohol. Marlene's strange behavior lands her in a hospital, leaving Boyo unable to prevent his siblings from losing touch with reality.
