Summer of 1944 in Finnish Karelia; After a long pause, the Soviet Army launched an overwhelming offensive that ruined everything. Martta barely has time to marry Aarne before being evacuated with her relatives Hilkka, who has just given birth to a son, Helmi Elisa, the children and her grandmother. In the turmoil of the retreat, the women try to stabilize together and cross paths with Aarne and Arttu, the only surviving brother of war widow Helmi Elisa. Relentlessly, the war exacts its price of suffering and death among civilians and soldiers.
