Into the Woods is a story about a Baker and his Wife who wish for a child but are under a curse laid upon the Baker's family by a Witch. The curse was placed because the Baker's father stole beans from the Witch's garden while his mother was pregnant, causing the Witch to be cursed with ugliness.
The Witch offers to lift the curse if the Baker and his Wife obtain four critical items for her: a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. The Witch cannot touch the objects herself, so she enlists the Baker and his Wife to do so.
The Baker and his Wife come into contact with various characters such as Jack, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella as they try to gather the items. After many failed attempts and misadventures, they finally break the curse.
Each of the other characters also receive their "happy endings": Cinderella marries the Prince, Jack provides for his mother by stealing from the Giant, Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother are saved from the Big Bad Wolf, and the Witch regains her youth and beauty after drinking a potion.
