1935, New York City. Pet store owner Johnny Kelly is relaying the story of his past life as mobster Johnny Dangerously, the telling of the story a morality tale.
He got into the mob, working for mob boss Jocko Dundee, on the noble reason of helping his ailing widowed mother, Ma Kelly, pay her ever mounting medical bills, in the process he finding that he had a special knack for certain aspects of the business, often saving Jocko from the rival gang led by Roman Moronie.
With the exception of Jocko, the older members of his gang, and nightclub performer Lil Sheridan who would become Mrs. Dangerously, no one knew of Johnny's double life, those not in the know including Ma, and Johnny's earnest, straight-laced, law-abiding younger brother, Tommy Kelly, they who believed Johnny was solely a hard-working and successful nightclub owner.
No longer wanting to lead that double life especially in increasing potential conflicts with Tommy, Johnny wanted to get out of the business. But he found that getting out wasn't quite as easy as going in.
A special cigarette case, an influence over the course of Johnny's criminal life, would prove to be a major factor in what happened to him in trying to get out.
