Keep the Lights On is a film set in late-1990s New York City, following the story of gay Danish documentary-filmmaker Erik Rothman. Erik has been engaging in multiple one-night stands since ending his last serious relationship with a man named Paolo. He meets bisexual corporate lawyer Paul Lucy through a gay-cruising telephone service, despite Paul being in a heterosexual relationship.
Their initial sexual encounter was supposed to be a one-time thing, but they slowly develop a relationship over the next decade. The highs of their relationship are fueled by their mutual sexual passion, while the lows are largely due to mistrust, Paul's disappearances, and disagreements over his possible crack problem.
Their problems are worsened by their coping mechanisms - Paul turns to drugs while Erik considers being with other men. The film explores the rollercoaster that is their relationship, with both characters struggling to navigate their feelings and insecurities.
