Kim's Convenience follows the story of the Kims, first generation Korean-Canadians who run a convenience store in inner city Toronto. They believe they have fully integrated into Canadian life, but others see them as having a more traditional Korean sensibility.
Most of their customers and their two Canadian-born children, Jung and Janet, view them this way. Jung left home at sixteen after an argument with his father, "Appa," and fell into juvenile delinquency. Now, Jung is trying to turn his life around, unbeknownst to Appa.
Umma and Janet have kept in touch with Jung, hoping for a reconciliation. Meanwhile, Janet feels over-parented and dreams of becoming a photographer. Appa and Umma want her to marry a nice, Christian, Korean boyfriend and take over the store.
