Mary Keith, a relative of Marilla's, has just passed away of consumption. Mary leaves behind two young children, Davey and Dora, who are now orphans. Despite Rachel's protests, Marilla decides to take in the children temporarily until their Uncle Willie comes for them in two weeks. Davey ends up being a handful to take care of, although he doesn't mean to be. In particular, he gets on Rachel's nerves, she who cannot live under the same roof as him. Because of some arising issues, Marilla has to make some decisions about the care of the children, both in the short and long term. Beyond the children staying at Green Gables, Rachel has been miserable of late. First, she, who had never been sick a day in her life, has a toothache with which she refuses to deal. And second, Sara and Olivia stumble across some historical information concerning Rachel and who looks to be an old suitor of hers named Ambrose Dimsdale, this history which Rachel refuses to discuss or be remembered.
