Little Lord Fauntleroy is a story about a young boy named Cedric who lives with his widowed mother in Manhattan. One day, an agent from Cedric's mysterious grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, arrives and asks them to move to England so that Cedric can learn aristocratic ways and inherit the vast estate.
Cedric's mother agrees, despite her misgivings, and they move to England. The Earl of Dorincourt is revealed to be a penurious misanthrope, disliked by almost everyone. However, Cedric sees only good in him and wins his heart with kindness.
As Cedric's relationship with his grandfather grows, the old man begins to change for the better. But their happiness is threatened when a vulgar American woman claims that her son is the true heir to the title, causing turmoil for the family.
