Synopsis

Thatcherism and the Irish troubles provide the backdrop for this study of Mick, a well-meaning youth in Sheffield, who has, unlike Dickens' Pip, no expectations. Mick lives with his parents, works on his motorbike, looks for work, and every two weeks gets his check from the dole. There are no jobs. His best mate Alan joins the army to fix tanks and is sent to Belfast to quell Catholics. At a disco, Mick meets Karen, who works at a shoe shop and lives with her recently-separated mom. Karen misses her dad. She offers Mick emotional stability and a route to adulthood; Alan pitches the army. Does Mick have a future?

The soundtrack of Looks and Smiles perfectly captures the gritty and bleak atmosphere of working-class life in Sheffield during the Thatcher era. The use of haunting melodies and somber tones effectively conveys the sense of hopelessness and desperation faced by the characters, adding depth and emotion to their struggles.

The use of music in Looks and Smiles elevates the emotional impact of the story, adding depth and richness to the characters' experiences.

Mark Parker
4/10

I found the choice of songs in the soundtrack to be distracting and out of place. Instead of enhancing the emotional depth of the scenes, the music sometimes overshadowed the dialogue and actions on screen, taking away from the overall impact of the film.

Michelle Miller
5/10

The music creates a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era while also highlighting the timeless themes of poverty, social inequality, and lost opportunities.

Carol Rodriguez
2/10

The soundtrack of Looks and Smiles felt disconnected from the gritty and bleak reality depicted in the film. The music seemed too upbeat and cheerful, failing to capture the struggles and hardships faced by the characters in the story.

Mark Baker
9/10

Additionally, the incorporation of traditional Irish music in the soundtrack subtly reflects the underlying tensions of the Irish Troubles, providing a nuanced layer of complexity to the film's narrative. The juxtaposition of these different musical elements creates a rich tapestry of sound that enhances the storytelling and immerses the audience in the harsh realities of the characters' lives.
