Midsommar - O Ritual

Synopsis

Traumatised and still struggling to come to terms with an appalling family tragedy, Dani, an American graduate student, turns to Christian, her self-centred and distant boyfriend, against the backdrop of their inevitable break-up. In high hopes of repairing their disintegrating relationship, Dani tags along with two of Christian's companions, and their cryptic friend, Pelle, to attend a once-every-ninety-years summer solstice festival at an isolated pagan commune nestled in the heart of the Swedish province of Hälsingland.

At last, for the first time in a long while, Dani feels happy. However, in this friendly and verdant haven of peace, harmony, and constant sunshine, the welcoming community's peculiar traditions start to blemish the folkloric utopia, as the uncomfortable feeling of uneasiness starts to creep up on Pelle's guests. But, in the eyes of the uninitiated newcomers, the naturalistic rituals seem brutal. Could a numbing truth be hiding in plain sight?

Andrew Thompson
4/10

The soundtrack of Midsommar felt disjointed and jarring, failing to enhance the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of the film. Instead of adding depth to the scenes, the music often felt out of place and distracting, pulling me out of the immersive experience.

Paul Brown

The score enhances the emotional journey of the protagonist, Dani, as she navigates through her trauma and finds a fleeting sense of happiness amidst the strange rituals of the summer solstice festival. The music intensifies the psychological tension and adds depth to Dani's inner turmoil, creating a powerful connection between the audience and the character.

Paul Campbell

The haunting and atmospheric soundscapes in the Midsommar soundtrack perfectly capture the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of the isolated pagan commune. The use of traditional folk instruments and dissonant tones creates a sense of uneasiness that mirrors the unfolding events of the film.

The juxtaposition of serene, ethereal melodies with jarring, discordant sounds reflects the contrasting themes of beauty and horror present in the film. This duality in the music effectively conveys the unsettling blend of tranquility and darkness that permeates the narrative, adding layers of complexity to the overall viewing experience.

4/10

I found the score of Midsommar to be repetitive and monotonous, lacking in originality and failing to evoke any emotional response. The lack of variety in the musical themes made the overall viewing experience feel tedious and uninspired, detracting from the tension and suspense that the film was trying to build.
