Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is a film that follows a small group of men including police officers, a doctor, a prosecutor, grave diggers, gendarmerie forces, and two brothers who are homicide suspects as they search for a buried body in the rural surroundings of the Anatolian town Keskin.
Kenan, one of the suspects, leads them from one water fountain to another, unable to remember where he and his mentally challenged brother buried the body due to being intoxicated at the time of the crime. The darkness of the landscape adds to the difficulty of the search.
As they search, the men engage in discussions on various topics such as yoghurt, lamb chops, family, death, ethics, and more. Before dawn, the group stops at a nearby village to eat, where Kenan reveals a crucial detail about the night of the killing.
Daylight breaks and the body is found, leading to an autopsy at the local hospital. The doctor discovers that the victim was buried alive, but intentionally omits this detail from the report to spare the victim's family from further grief.
The film concludes with a poignant scene of the mother and son walking away with the husband's belongings, highlighting the son's act of kindness in retrieving a soccer ball for other children before returning to his mother.
