Our Lady of the Nile is set in 1973 and follows a group of young Rwandan girls at a Belgian-run Catholic boarding school. The story is inspired by true events that foreshadowed the 1994 genocide during the Rwandan Civil War.
Many of the girls come from elite families, while others are less privileged. The school is divided further by anti-Tutsi rhetoric under existing Hutu rule, creating a tense atmosphere.
However, amidst this backdrop, there is a captivating yet understated tale of colonial refusal, intertwined with adolescent mischief and curiosity. The stakes are high, as the girls navigate the complexities of their society and the looming threat of violence.
