In Rent a Friend, the talented painter ARTHUR suffers from artist's block. Alfred doesn't care about getting rich and famous. He limits himself to painting brightly colored Mexican hats. Alfred's total lack of ambition irritates his girlfriend MONIEK more and more. Moniek is a successful writer for a popular Dutch soap opera and continually accuses Alfred of having no business instinct. The soap opera episodes created by Moniek are entirely based on her own life. When Alfred watches one of the episodes, he correctly infers that she is having an affair with the executive producer. He decides to leave Moniek and sets out to show the world that she has no problem making money. She starts a company called Rent a Friend and rents herself out as a friend to those who need her. The concept is so successful that she will soon be running a veritable "friend empire." Things really take off when Alfred hires Françoise, the highly inventive manager.
