Samson & Delilah is an astoundingly affecting story about two Australian Aboriginal kids who travel in dark places in their bid for survival. The film, written, directed, and shot by Warwick Thornton, won the Cannes Film Festival Camera d'Or award for best first feature film in 2009.
Interestingly, Thornton gives young Delilah (Melissa Gibson) the hero's role, while Samson (Rowan McNamara) is portrayed as the lost soul who needs to be saved. Delilah is seen as the nurturer of her Nana (Mitjili Gibson) and of Samson, enduring beating, humiliation, abduction, and physical harm throughout the film.
Despite the challenges she faces, the smile on Delilah's face at the end of the film surmounts all that has gone before, showcasing her resilience as a survivor. This film is considered one of the great Australian films, offering a beautiful love story that provides insight into a hidden world.
