Shadows and Fog is a story set in the middle of a dark and foggy night. Max Kleinman is abruptly awakened from a deep sleep by a group of men who want him to join their lynch mob in capturing a serial murderer. This killer strikes only in foggy conditions and primarily uses a wire cord for strangulation.
Kleinman, despite being treated as a schmuck by those around him, is included in the plan without being told his role, despite his requests for information. As he wanders through the dark streets, he encounters various people, including a young innocent named Irmy.
Irmy, a sword swallower with a traveling circus, has left the circus and her boyfriend Paul, a clown, due to wanting a baby and catching him cheating. Her journey through the streets leads her to unexpected places, such as a brothel.
As Kleinman and Irmy navigate their initial goals of capturing the murderer and finding shelter for the night, they realize that their time together may bring up deeper issues in their lives. However, they may become targets of the murderer and Kleinman could be a scapegoat for competing lynch mobs seeking justice for the murders.
