Shallow Hal tells the story of a 9 year old boy named Hal who visits his father in the hospital, who is about to pass away and is on a pain killer called morphine.
Due to the side effects of the medication, his father ends up giving Hal all the wrong advice about what to look for in women for love's sake. This leads Hal to grow up focusing only on outward beauty.
Eventually, Hal meets psychologist Tony Robbins in an elevator and they get trapped together. Hal shares his history with dating with Tony, who is shocked by his shallow methods.
As a result, Tony gives Hal a special psychic power to see into people's souls if he meets them for the first time, and for the remainder of his interactions with them. This encourages Hal to focus more inward on people and not judge a book by its cover.
