Star Trek: Deep Space Nine follows the aftermath of a brutal decades-long occupation by Cardassians on the planet Bajor. The Bajorans request assistance from Starfleet and the Federation to help rebuild their world after the Cardassians withdraw from Bajoran space.
Starfleet establishes their new headquarters on the old Cardassian space station orbiting Bajor, Terak Nor, now known as Deep Space Nine. The new commanding officer, Benjamin Sisko, and Lieutenant Dax, discover a stable wormhole leading to the Gamma Quadrant, 60,000 light years away, which is revealed to be inhabited by beings known as the Prophets.
The Bajorans declare Sisko to be the Emissary of the Prophets, causing tension with Starfleet and some Bajoran religious figures. Sisko must navigate his roles as a Starfleet Officer and the Emissary while complying with the Prime Directive of non-interference.
The crew learns that the Gamma Quadrant is controlled by The Dominion, led by shape-shifting Founders who created genetically-engineered soldiers called Jem'Hadar. The Cardassians ally with The Dominion, sparking a war with the Federation, Klingons, and other races.
The Federation-Klingon alliance must resort to unconventional means to secure victory, resulting in immense costs.
