Synopsis

The Black Cat is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The narrator begins by describing his love for animals and how his temperament changed after becoming an alcoholic. He adopts a black cat named Pluto, whom he adores. However, his behavior becomes increasingly violent and he eventually harms the cat, leading to its death. The narrator then adopts another black cat that resembles Pluto, but this cat also meets a tragic end. The story takes a dark turn as the narrator's guilt and paranoia consume him, ultimately leading to his own downfall.
