The Cleaners

Synopsis

The Cleaners is a documentary film that explores the hidden world of content moderators in the Philippines. These workers are responsible for reviewing and removing disturbing and violent content from social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The film sheds light on the psychological toll that this job takes on the moderators, who are exposed to graphic and traumatizing images on a daily basis. Many of them suffer from PTSD and other mental health issues as a result of their work.

The Cleaners also raises important questions about censorship, freedom of speech, and the power that tech companies hold over the information that we see online. It challenges viewers to consider the ethical implications of outsourcing content moderation to low-wage workers in developing countries.

The Cleaners is a thought-provoking and eye-opening look at the dark side of the internet and the human cost of keeping it clean. It serves as a powerful reminder of the unseen labor that goes into maintaining the digital world that we often take for granted.
