"The Comfort of Strangers" is a story about an English couple who travel to Venice in an attempt to work on their relationship. Throughout their holiday, there is a noticeable tension and distance between them, and they begin to feel as though they are being watched.
One evening, while trying to find a restaurant, they get lost and are approached by a stranger who offers to show them the way. This stranger proceeds to ply them with wine and tell them disturbing stories from his past, leaving them feeling disoriented, physically ill, and morally repelled.
Despite this unsettling encounter, the couple agrees to visit the stranger's lavish apartment the next day. This visit forces them to confront difficult questions about each other, but they soon find themselves entangled in the stranger's dark and menacing fantasies.
