Synopsis

The Perez Family is a film about Cuban boat-lift refugees (Carter era) who land in Miami with different goals. The story focuses on relationships that develop under hard circumstances, with long-lasting effects. The drama is real, and the story is clean and not predictable.

Character development is adequate, and the actor list is first class. The writing is good, and Marisa Tomei delivers an incredible performance, as usual. Her character is the most developed, but a bit predictable at some points.

At times, however, it feels like you are only seeing the table of contents version of a great novel. There was so much talent available, and more character development was expected. This could be due to editing issues.

The politics, both national and international, were glossed over and made to seem insignificant, like another day in the park. The boat lift of political prisoners from Cuba deserved more development and insight, especially with the amazing cast.

The end of the movie provides a twist that is not so strange as to be unbelievable. However, there was so much interpersonal drama available that was not included. The acting was excellent considering the limitations of the script.
