Synopsis

South Africa, 1950: A gold mining village in the desert like something one would imagine out of the old west - to survive, a boy must be as tough and as clever as a grown man. Robert Nile is such a boy - his only goal is to run away, to break with the life he knows, to be a success...

Cape Town, 1966: A modest home wedged amongst others on the waterfront, the sound of piano music can be heard from within, someone is practicing Beethoven. A car pulls up outside and a man enters the house - he shoots dead the parents of the young piano player, Alex. But the gunman cannot bring himself to shoot the boy and Alex is left behind, traumatized...

Koln, Germany, 29 years later: ALEX LANEY (Christopher LAMBERT) plays the same Beethoven piece in his loft as he prepares for his latest "job" - taking out an ugly man, the killer of a 7-year-old little girl. The music gives him solace and traps him in his traumatic past. Having dispatched the ugly man, Alex reports back to his boss, Fernand, who informs him that his next job will be in South Africa protecting a powerful and wealthy businessman, ROBERT NILE (Dennis HOPPER).

South Africa: Alex arrives in Cape Town. A new place, a new job - perhaps the start of a normal life. Working alongside Farrell, Robert's right hand man, Alex's assignment appears to be straight forward, but... Robert has been forced into testifying against mobster Cristo Nichol - and no one is safe from Christo's clutches. Alex realizes that Roberts connections to the criminal underworld are deeper than he would care to admit, but by now Alex feels obliged to protect both the man he has come to respect and his beautiful daughter, ERIKA NILE (Diane KRUGER).

After an attempt on Robert's life, Alex knows that Robert has been betrayed by those closest to him and, with Christo out on bail, they are forced to run for the only safe haven left to them, the remote village where Robert grew up. The final countdown is played out against the harsh desert landscape of Africa - where Alex must face not only his pursuers, but also his past demons and their terrible connection to Robert.
