Synopsis

The Saimaa Gesture

In the novel The Saimaa Gesture, written by Finnish author Arto Paasilinna, the story follows the life of a man named Juntunen who is a former military officer. Juntunen decides to retire to a small cabin in the Finnish countryside, where he plans to live a peaceful and quiet life.

However, Juntunen's plans are disrupted when he discovers a group of environmental activists who are protesting the construction of a dam that would destroy the natural habitat of the Saimaa ringed seal, an endangered species. Juntunen becomes involved in the activists' cause and decides to help them in their fight against the dam.

As Juntunen becomes more involved in the activists' activities, he begins to question his own beliefs and values, and ultimately finds himself on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
