Following her third miscarriage from in vitro fertilization and learning that she cannot have a child biologically, Christy Bennett and her husband Mitch Bennett believe the next logical step to start their family is through surrogacy. Going through the legal process, they decide, upon the advice of the surrogacy lawyer Beth Franklin, to choose a young woman named Mallory Parkes as the surrogate. They want to be as much a friend as they can to Mallory through the process without getting too involved as, as written in the contract, they will not have Mallory in their lives after the baby is born. As the pregnancy progresses, it becomes obvious first to Christy then to Mitch that Mallory is delusional, she envisioning a life as the baby's mother, and Mitch as her husband and the baby's father. The Bennetts are at a loss of what to do as they do not want to alienate Mallory as she is holding the welfare of the unborn baby hostage. Even if Mallory is to carry the baby to term, the question becomes if Christy and Mitch can ever feel totally safe from Mallory, who has some secrets from her past which would provide some clues as to how far she will go to get what she wants.
