The World According to Garp follows the life of T.S. Garp, an aspiring writer and freestyle wrestler who has led an unusual life.
Born in 1944 and named after his father, Garp is the bastard son of opinionated feminist nurse Jenny Fields.
Jenny wanted a child but not a husband, so she got herself pregnant by a hospitalized soldier known only to her as Technical Sergeant Garp.
Shaped by his mother's influence, Garp shows great aptitude in both writing and wrestling.
His mother's curiosity in human sexuality inspires her to try her hand at writing as well.
Garp's life is filled with Jenny's friends, acquaintances, and advisers, including a transsexual ex-football player named Roberta Muldoon and a group of women who practice self-mutilation.
Helen Holm, the daughter of Garp's wrestling coach, also enters his life, and they have a stormy but passionate relationship based on their love of literature.
Through all these experiences, Garp just wants to find his place in a world that has a different sensibility than him.
