Thoroughbreds is a film set in suburban Connecticut, where upper-class high schooler Amanda (Olivia Cooke) euthanizes her crippled horse with a knife, leading to charges of animal cruelty.
Some time later, Amanda visits the home of the more popular and academically-inclined Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy). The girls were once best friends but drifted apart after the death of Lily's father.
They reunite under the guise of hanging out and having a casual tutoring session. However, Amanda is aware that Lily's mother (Kaili Vernoff) has paid Lily to spend time with her. Despite Lily's denial of being paid, Amanda, who is emotionally detached due to a mental disorder, remains unaffected.
Eventually, Lily and Amanda meet again, this time of their own accord, and they reignite their friendship.
