Cartoonist Henry Rush and his photographer wife Muriel, who was a former band singer, own a Victorian house that also doubles as an apartment building in San Francisco. Living with them are their two daughters, 21 year old brunette Jackie (a bank teller and aspiring fashion designer) and 18 year old blond Sara (a college student). When the transvestite named Rafkin who was renting the downstairs apartment dies suddenly, the girls decide to move out of their parent's apartment and take over Rafkin's old place. However, the girls still must contend with Henry, who not only is a bit overprotective, but very conservative as well. Also adding to the confusion is Sarah's shy and somewhat goofy friend Monroe as well as Muriel's mother, and Henry's bitter enemy, Iris.
