Synopsis

Transit is a novel written by Anna Seghers that tells the story of a German man named Georg who is fleeing from the Nazis during World War II. As he tries to escape to Mexico, he finds himself stuck in Marseille, France, where he must navigate a complex web of bureaucracy and deception in order to secure passage on a ship. Along the way, he meets other refugees who are also trying to flee the horrors of the war.

Georg's journey is fraught with danger and uncertainty as he struggles to survive in a city teeming with spies and informants. As he waits for his transit papers to come through, he becomes entangled in the lives of his fellow refugees, forming deep connections with some and facing betrayal from others. Throughout the novel, Georg grapples with questions of morality and identity as he tries to make sense of the chaos around him.

Transit is a powerful and poignant exploration of the refugee experience, capturing the desperation and resilience of those who are forced to leave their homes in search of safety. Through Georg's eyes, we see the human cost of war and the lengths to which people will go to find a place of refuge in a world torn apart by conflict.
