Tsunami
A tsunami is a series of ocean waves with very long wavelengths (typically hundreds of kilometers) caused by large-scale disturbances of the ocean, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, or meteorite impacts. When the ocean floor is suddenly displaced, it sets off a chain reaction that creates massive waves that can travel across entire ocean basins at speeds of up to 800 kilometers per hour.
Tsunamis are most commonly generated by underwater earthquakes, where the sudden movement of tectonic plates displaces a large volume of water. As the waves approach shallow coastal areas, their speed decreases but their height increases dramatically, leading to devastating flooding and destruction.
Warning systems have been developed to detect and alert coastal communities of an impending tsunami, giving people precious minutes to evacuate to higher ground. Despite these efforts, tsunamis remain a powerful and unpredictable force of nature that can cause widespread devastation and loss of life.
