Tsunami
A tsunami is a series of ocean waves with very long wavelengths (typically hundreds of kilometers) caused by large-scale disturbances of the ocean, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, or meteorite impacts. When the ocean floor is suddenly displaced, it sets off a chain reaction that displaces the water above it, creating a tsunami wave that can travel at high speeds across the ocean.
The most destructive tsunamis are usually caused by undersea earthquakes, where the sudden movement of tectonic plates displaces a large volume of water. As the tsunami wave approaches shallow waters near the coast, it slows down and the wave height increases dramatically, leading to devastating flooding and destruction in coastal areas.
Early warning systems and evacuation plans are crucial in mitigating the impact of tsunamis, as they can provide valuable time for people to move to higher ground and seek safety. Despite advances in technology, tsunamis remain a powerful and unpredictable force of nature that can cause widespread devastation and loss of life.
