Synopsis

Underground tells the story of three specific time periods in the lives of Belgradian friends Petar Popara, known as Blacky, and Marko Dren.

The first period is during WWII from 1941 to 1944, when the Nazis started bombing Belgrade. The second period is in 1961, at the height of the Cold War. The third period is near the start of the Yugoslav Wars.

What Blacky and Marko have in common is their love for their homeland and their opportunism in looking out for themselves. They are willing to sacrifice themselves for each other, but also willing to sacrifice each other for their own needs.

Shortly after the start of the Nazi bombing in Belgrade, they hide their friends and family in Marko's grandfather's cellar to escape capture. The cellar is turned into a munitions factory, with the inhabitants making weapons to defeat the Nazis.

Marko and Blacky continue to live above ground, pretending to do their part to end the war. When the war ends, they do not tell those underground, who continue their hidden life for safety. The world moves on without them, listing them as casualties of the bombing.

Their actions affect several people, including Blacky's wife Vera, actress Natalija Zovkov, Jovan (the first child born in the cellar), Ivan (Marko's brother and zookeeper), and Soni (a chimpanzee saved by Ivan from the zoo).

Overall, the music in Underground is not just a background element, but a vital component that elevates the film to a higher level, evoking a range of emotions and enhancing the audience's connection to the characters and their experiences.

Timothy Davis
6/10

The emotional impact of the story is heightened by the poignant melodies and melancholic themes woven throughout the soundtrack, which effectively convey the human cost of war and the sacrifices made by the characters.

William Adams
6/10

The transition to the Yugoslav Wars is marked by a shift in the soundtrack to more intense and aggressive compositions, reflecting the escalating conflict and violence that Blacky and Marko find themselves involved in.

Mary Scott
8/10

The soundtrack's ability to seamlessly transition between moments of action, drama, and introspection reflects the complex and multi-layered narrative of Underground, keeping the audience engaged and invested in the characters' fates.

Stephanie Garcia
1/10

The soundtrack of Underground feels disconnected from the historical context and events depicted in the film. The music does not effectively evoke the time periods of WWII, the Cold War, and the Yugoslav Wars, leaving the audience feeling detached from the setting and narrative. A more authentic and culturally relevant musical score could have greatly enhanced the film's impact.

John Taylor
5/10

The use of traditional Balkan folk music in certain scenes adds authenticity and cultural depth to the soundtrack, grounding the story in its specific geographical context and adding emotional resonance to key moments.

John Smith
7/10

The music enhances the storytelling by effectively conveying the characters' conflicting emotions and moral dilemmas, such as Blacky and Marko's struggle between loyalty to their homeland and self-preservation.

Ronald Jackson

Daniel Evans
5/10

The integration of sound effects and ambient noise into the music enhances the immersive quality of the soundtrack, creating a sense of realism and immediacy that draws the audience deeper into the world of Underground.

James Davis
6/10

The music during the Cold War period in 1961 is evocative of the uncertainty and paranoia of the era, using discordant tones and dissonant harmonies to create a sense of unease and suspense.

John Robinson
1/10

The soundtrack for Underground fails to capture the emotional depth and complexity of the characters and their experiences throughout the three different time periods. The music feels generic and uninspired, lacking the necessary depth to truly enhance the storytelling.

Susan Allen
5/10

The soundtrack's dynamic range allows for shifts in tone and mood, from moments of quiet reflection to intense action sequences, providing a rich and diverse musical backdrop to the narrative.

Melissa Lopez
8/10

The use of traditional Balkan folk music in the soundtrack adds an authentic and cultural dimension to the film, enriching the audience's immersion in the story and setting.

Andrew Thompson
6/10

The themes of loyalty and betrayal between Blacky and Marko are mirrored in the music, with motifs that subtly hint at the complexities of their relationship and the moral dilemmas they face throughout the film.

George Baker
4/10

The use of repetitive musical motifs in the film's soundtrack becomes tiresome and predictable, failing to effectively build tension or create a sense of atmosphere. The lack of variety in the music makes it feel monotonous and detracts from the overall viewing experience.

Ronald Martin
8/10

The soundtrack of Underground perfectly captures the intense and emotional atmosphere of the different time periods depicted in the film, from the chaos of WWII to the tension of the Cold War era.

Ashley Nelson
5/10

The soundtrack of Underground effectively captures the tension and chaos of the WWII period in Belgrade, with haunting melodies and dramatic orchestrations that enhance the wartime setting.
