Synopsis

When a Man Loves a Woman is a dramatic treatment of a family torn apart by alcoholism and recovering from it. The film stars popular actress Meg Ryan as Alice Green, a school counselor with a serious drinking problem.

Her husband, Michael (Andy Garcia), is an airline pilot. Despite being lighthearted and loving, Alice's reckless behavior and neglect of her children, nine-year-old Jess and four-year-old Casey, lead to a breaking point.

After an accident, Alice realizes she has "hit bottom" and seeks help in a rehab clinic. Upon returning home, she has overcome her addiction and become independent and strong, which causes issues with her perfectionist and controlling husband.

Michael struggles to adjust to the new dynamic, as he is used to his wife being weak and helpless. The couple seeks the help of a marriage counselor to address Michael's "co-dependency" on Alice's role as an alcoholic.
