Synopsis

Whiplash is a story about Michael Gordon, an aspiring artist in San Francisco who falls in love with Laurie Rogers, the first person to purchase one of his paintings. Despite initially feeling unworthy of the purchase, Laurie's reasons for buying the painting change his perspective. However, Laurie mysteriously leaves Mike without a word, leading him to track her down in New York City.

Mike discovers that Laurie is actually married to Rex Durant, a ruthless nightclub owner who manages boxers. Rex offers to manage Mike as a boxer, using the stage name Mike Angelo, in order to be close to Laurie. Mike soon realizes that Rex has a hold over Laurie and her brother, Dr. Arnold Vincent, who is struggling with personal issues.

As Mike tries to uncover the reasons behind Laurie's decision to stay with Rex, he also faces the danger of falling under Rex's control, which could have tragic consequences in the boxing ring.
