Sinopsis

Whiplash

A los diecinueve años, Andrew Niemann quiere ser el mejor baterista de jazz del mundo, en la misma liga que Buddy Rich. Este objetivo es a pesar de no provenir de una familia de grandes músicos, con Jim, su padre profesor de secundaria, siendo un escritor fracasado. Andrew está comenzando su primer año en el Conservatorio de Música Shaffer, la mejor escuela de música en los Estados Unidos.

En Shaffer, ser el mejor significa ser aceptado para estudiar bajo la dirección de Terence Fletcher y ser invitado a tocar en su banda de estudio, que representa a la escuela en competencias de jazz. Basado en su primer encuentro poco positivo, Andrew se sorprende de que Fletcher le pida unirse a la banda, aunque sea en la posición de baterista alterno, lo cual él está más que feliz de hacer inicialmente.

Andrew rápidamente aprende que Fletcher opera con miedo e intimidación, nunca conformándose con lo que considera menos que lo mejor en cada momento. Ser el mejor en la mente de Fletcher no solo implica tocar bien, sino saber que estás tocando bien y si no, qué estás haciendo mal. Su modus operandi crea una atmósfera de miedo y de cada hombre o mujer por sí mismo dentro de la banda.

A pesar de todo, Andrew trabaja duro para ser el mejor. Tiene que descubrir las prioridades de su vida y qué está dispuesto a sacrificar para ser el mejor. La otra pregunta es cuánto abuso emocional soportará por parte de Fletcher para alcanzar esa grandeza, la cual puede creer que solo puede lograr con las oportunidades que Fletcher le brinda.
