Il y a longtemps, le sultan Shahryar (Dougray Scott) est devenu fou après son traumatisme proche de l'assassinat, auquel sa femme a collaboré et est mort de ses mains. Maintenant, elle doit parier que son plan fonctionnera alors qu'elle essaie de guérir sa folie en lui racontant histoire après histoire merveilleuse, qui incluent les contes d'Ali Baba (Rufus Sewell) et des quarante voleurs, et d'Aladdin (Jason Scott Lee) et son Lampe merveilleuse. Pendant ce temps, le vilain frère du sultan élabore ses propres plans, et les histoires de Shéhérezade sont plus utiles contre lui que quiconque ne peut l'imaginer.
