Vor langer Zeit ist der Sultan Shahryar (Dougray Scott) nach seinem traumatisierenden Beinahe-Attentat verrückt geworden, bei dem seine Frau mitgearbeitet hatte und infolgedessen durch seine Hände starb. Nun will er seinem paranoiden Frauenverdacht diabolisch Ausdruck verleihen, indem er eine Frau aus dem Harem heiratet und am nächsten Morgen hinrichten lässt. Um dies zu verhindern, bietet sich die Tochter des Großwesirs und Jugendfreundin des Sultans, Scheherezade (Mili Avital), als Braut an. Jetzt muss sie darauf setzen, dass ihr Plan aufgeht, während sie versucht, seinen Wahnsinn zu heilen, indem sie ihm eine Geschichte nach der anderen erzählt, darunter die Geschichten von Ali Baba (Rufus Sewell) und den Vierzig Dieben, und Aladdin (Jason Scott Lee) und seinen Wunderbare Lampe. Währenddessen schmiedet der schurkische Bruder des Sultans seine eigenen Pläne, und Scheherezades Geschichten sind gegen ihn nützlicher, als irgendjemand ahnen kann.
