Obsédé par l'idée de surmonter l'obstacle de la mort et déterminé à se disculper en soutenant sa théorie, l'ambitieux étudiant en médecine Herbert West arrive en Nouvelle-Angleterre après avoir survécu à un incident horrible à l'Institut de médecine en Suisse.
Et bientôt, Herbert reprend là où il s'était arrêté; d'abord, en expérimentant avec des tissus de félins morts, puis avec des cadavres humains frais, convaincant son colocataire sceptique Dan Cain de se joindre à son projet audacieux.
Mais alors que les deux scientifiques visionnaires creusent de plus en plus profondément dans un territoire inexploré, les cadavres réanimés de West commencent à se promener sur le campus, attirant l'attention du Dr Hill: l'ancien ennemi juré d'Herbert, qui aspire à prendre le crédit de la découverte stupéfiante.
Maintenant, les morts se lèvent à nouveau, même avec un peu d'aide. Cependant, le jeune réanimateur peut-il maîtriser le pouvoir de son réactif vert phosphorescent?
